Miyako!!!
Miyako!! My go to spot when it comes to sushi! I remember coming here before I even liked sushi and just ordering the teriyaki chicken lunch special. Then I made my way here after I found out that I loved to eat sushi, more of the rolls than sashimi! Miyako, is a small restaurant, very clean inside and always filled with super friendly waiter and sushi chefs. Be first looks it may look like there is a small amount of parking in front of the building, but seriously there is a lot of parking surrounding the area, the day you can’t find parking here is when pig’s can fly! I am not too big on my fish, and really to tell you the truth I can never tell if the sushi is fresh from another place, the only thing I know of is that if it is good, then I will remember it. Miyako never seems to fail my expectations when it comes to presentation and taste. The sushi chef’s take their time plating your dish and really it comes out looking amazing! One of the best things about Miyako is that they serve Sapporo beer on tap!!! Yeah…..on tap!!!!! Sapporo on tap plus some sake, you know what the equals….Elite Sake Bombs!!!! BANZAI!!! Anything you order here comes with three appetizers which are: Edamame which I forgot to take a picture of, but they serve it to you nice and hot. Highly recommended to sprinkle salt on it as it is still hot so it absorbs it nicely! Second is the Miso Soup, which isn’t to speical because it tastes like every other Miso Soup I have ever had. If you haven’t had Miso Soup yet, do not and I repeat do not use your spoon and slurp the soup from it! Grab the bowl with your hands, as if it was an awkward shaped cup, and slurp it right from the bowl, that is the traditional way to enjoy your Miso Soup, you don’t want to dishonor them now do you? Lastly is this cabbage salad, which is seriously out of this world! It is cabbage with lightly sprinkled pepper, showered with vinaigrette oh man it is just delicious! My brother and I always end up just ordering a large, because on the real….you will want to ask for more! The cabbage salad also comes with thinly sliced almonds, and that really compliments the cabbage very well! Another huge recommendation from me, be sure to upgrade to the large salad, because seriously you will regret it if you don’t! If you don’t like it….then something is obviously wrong with your taste buds! Here are two pictures of the Miso Soup as well as that delicious Cabbage Salad!
Like every other sushi place, they give you a big menu, and have a variety of different kinds of food going from: Sashimi, sushi rolls, teriyaki plates, udon noodles and many more! Of course when you order you sushi, there is a sheet of paper that you just mark how many you want. Like I said in the beginning the service here is top notch, they usually have two waiters/waitress waiting near the cash register and really monitors to make sure everyone in the restaurant is doing well. After you write what you want and also order with your server, you just have fun with who you are with, and wait for your food, and seriously Miyako is an amazing place to wait because you are rewarded with delicious food. This is what we ended up ordering:
Katie (my sister):
My sister gets the dynamite roll, which is pretty much just like a California roll, but it has spicy mayo in it. My sister being the weird one she is, asks for no spicy mayo, which turns it into a California Roll, with tempura shrimp on top. My sister mentioned that doing that and taking off the spicy mayo is a lot cheaper than getting the shirmp tempura roll. I guess she made sense, but the roll it self was good given that it was coming from Miyako. Dip the roll into your little bowl of soy sauce, well with me its soy sauce and a mixture of a little bit of wasabi, and it tastes great. Again as you can see from the picture, the presentation is amazing.
Christian (my cousin):
My cousin is in love with the Baked Baby Lobster roll, if you are all thinking that it is a baby lobster, guess again! Its craw fish, which I guess can be a baby lobster but not really type of thing. Being that this roll is baked, this roll can take a good minute or too, but again amazing food is always rewarded to the most patient person. The presentation looked again, perfectly done. The California rolls again being the bottom star, but the baked baby lobster sitting on top of the roll just made it mouth watering. The sushi chefs seriously put the right amount of eel sauce on the plate, and it made the scrapping of the eel sauce plus the dipping of soy sauce onto this roll fantastic! This roll is really good, again I doubt it is something I would order because I don’t really crave for this roll as much as I do with the roll I ordered, but seriously if someone I go with orders this, better expect me to either ask for one, or just use my ninja skills and sneak one away.
Rod (my brother):
My brother is a huge fan of Sashimi, and loves it from here! He can eat the whole Sashimi plate and probably a lot more, as for myself I can only eat like two or three, despite how much I love salmon, its the texture that gets me. The sashimi here is never bad, I can tell just by the taste that it is fresh. Again amazing presentation with the Sashimi Plate, and as well as the Soft Shell Crab Roll. The front and back roll of the Soft Shell Crab Roll has soft shell crab legs popping out. The Soft Shell Crab Roll has a really nice taste and texture parts when it comes to eating it, the crunch from the fried soft shell crab is amazing and really cancels out the crunch from some vegetables that are in the roll. This roll usually has rice on the outside, some more soft shell crab inside of the roll along with avocado. Anything from Miyako is amazing, and soy sauce plus the eel sauce just compliments it very well!
Me (Paul Aka Ssp):
Lastly is my order, the funny this is Miyako is the first place I actually tried mussel, and ever since then as you can see from above here I actually ordered it on my own. Again I am very big on texture, and used to hate the texture the mussel has, but when my friend made me try it, it was delicious. Each mussel is covered with what seems like spicy mayo topped with orange fish eggs also known as roe. Seriously though, these green mussels are amazing, and they are huge that the chef cuts them in half already for you. The juice coming from the cooking process, is amazing. Its a whole different taste when it comes to mussel, just when you think its over the spice from the spicy mayo slightly tickles your taste bud, its a really good spice though, I can probably finish like 4 orders of these green mussels. And now we have my favorite sushi roll from Miyako, this is the roll I will crave every now and then, really depending on how the day went by. Its the Salmon Crunch Roll, which is pretty much, on the inside its a lot of crab, and I mean a lot of crab, plus avocado and cucumber. Here is a small story, during lent I gave up eating rice, and the whole time during Lent I was craving for some sushi, and I was super upset that I couldn’t eat any sushi!!!! Well as you can see, my favorite roll has no rice on it, I always thought there was rice, it really is just a whole bunch of crab stuffed into the roll. On the outside of the roll, you can see that it has tempura as well as salmon skin right in the middle of the tempura. The salmon crunch roll is amazing with the eel sauce as well as the soy sauce. Even though it is imitation crab inside the roll, it was really tasty. This roll was really good, me and my brother agreed to purchase one more and split the dish. Seriously, the crunch salmon roll is probably the best salmon sushi dish I have ever eaten at!
Ssp’s Final Thoughts:
Miyako will always be my go to spot when it comes to craving and wanting sushi near the house! The staff at miyako are very friendly and always look to help you. The sushi chef’s are very talented and love to feed you eyes before your mouth with their presentation. As I said before, Miyako serves Sapporo beer on tap, with frozen mugs as well, which equals uber delicious sake bombs! I know my friends have gone to Miyako’s before and have said that some nights it can get very packed! I don’t blame him, for one the restaurant is pretty small, and well if I think the food here is just amazing, I am sure everyone else will think so too! I know I will be coming here soon enough, I hope all you readers enjoyed my food venture to Miyako’s! Feast Well!
